Not Quite There Yet

The Gunners started off the first five minutes of the game strong, keeping the ball in the opponents half, taking on defenders with great control and using fients to get past the players. Juventus withstood our initial attack and used their size and speed advantage to take control of the game. These games continue to be learning experiences for our much younger team as they keep adjusting how they play on a large field and with the concept of a team game that requires discipline with positions. Being goalside of the ball has also been an area of weakness with this young group, but the defenders and midfielders put more effort to be between the goal and the attackers throughout the half which helped protect our keeper. The half ended with Juventus leading 6-0.

Half-Time Adjustments

As the half progress, the Commanders maintained positions and increased the rate of being gooalside which would continue to our objective for the second half. Many challenges were lost in the first half from the larger opponents, so reminders to go in low and strong each time were also a focal point. One area that the Gunners were consistent with was when we had possession of the ball, attacking with purpose and controlling the ball closely as they moved up the field. The game ended with a final score of 15-0, but not once in the second half did a player on the field look to give up on a play and the Commanders ended with some excitement in the offensive end with a few chances of scoring.

Players of the Match

Players of the match go to Connor O’Toole and Evan O’Toole with both players making the greatest adjustments of being goalside and recovering on defense. Many hard tackles were won on the field by sheer determination by both players. One specific moment stood out when Connor went in for a hard tackle and both players fell, but Connor got back up and ran the loose ball down only to go in to win another hard tackle.  The Coach yelled out after hearing the crunching of bodies and asked, “You all set Connor?” and his response was to yell “Yup!” as he chased down another play.
